Cosplay/Costume Policy

Inclusive Costume Contest Policy

At Steel City Con we are committed to fostering an environment that celebrates creativity, diversity, and inclusivity. Our Costume Contest is an opportunity for participants to express themselves imaginatively while respecting the values and dignity of all individuals and cultures. This policy outlines the guidelines to ensure a fun, safe, and inclusive experience for everyone involved.

  1. Cultural Sensitivity
    • Avoid Cultural Appropriation: Costumes that mimic or caricature cultural, religious, or ethnic identities in a disrespectful or stereotypical manner are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, traditional attire from cultures other than one’s own when worn without understanding or respect.
    • Prohibited Elements: Blackface, brownface, yellowface, redface, and any other forms of makeup or dress that mock or demean a particular race or ethnicity are strictly forbidden.
  1. Respectful Representation
    • Avoid Offensive Themes: Costumes that depict excessive violence, hate symbols, or references to tragic events (e.g., natural disasters, terrorist attacks) are not allowed.
    • Gender Expression: Participants are free to choose costumes that represent any gender identity or expression. Respect for all gender presentations is mandatory.
  1. Age-Appropriate Content
    • Family-Friendly Attire: Given the diverse age range of attendees, costumes should avoid explicit content, excessive gore, or sexualization.
    • Nudity Not Allowed: Costumes must cover private areas appropriately. Nudity or costumes that are excessively revealing are not permitted.
  1. Accessibility and Safety
    • Mobility Considerations: Ensure that costumes do not impede movement or pose tripping hazards to oneself or others.
    • No Real Weapons: Props resembling weapons must be clearly fake and should comply with the event’s prop weapon policy.
  1. Behavioral Expectations
    • Consent is Key: Always ask before touching or photographing someone. Respect their response without question.
    • Zero Tolerance for Harassment: Any form of harassment, bullying, or discriminatory behavior will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the event.
  1. Feedback and Reporting
    • Open Dialogue: If you feel uncomfortable or witness any violations of this policy, please approach event staff. Your concerns will be addressed promptly and confidentially.

By adhering to this Inclusive Costume Contest Policy, we can ensure that our event remains a welcoming and enjoyable space for all participants. Let’s celebrate creativity with respect and understanding.
